Highland getaway

Last two weeks I was up in the misty hills of Cameron Highlands. I wasn't alone, a big group of wonderful people went up there with me. To be more specific, they were my tutorial group mates from UTAR. The journey there was both exciting and adventurous. It was filled with many sharp corners and sweeping turns. I'd be overjoyed if I was driving.

1, 2, BREATHE!

People people let's not panic. Stop pulling your hair out. Stop spewing 'flowery languages' at strangers. Stop giving your brother the people's elbow. Let's calm down and stop doing other acts of absurdity. Such as starting your own ISP company.

It has been reported that the current slow browsing experience we all are suffering from now was caused by circuit faults on the under-sea cable network linking Boleh-land and Europe. Maintenance are being done to the circuit at the moment. So it's just a matter of time before we are up to speed again.

Undersea cable problem disrupts Internet services

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has reported some disruption to its Internet services due to circuit faults on the submarine cable network linking Malaysia and Europe. The services would be completely restored by Dec 31.

TM, in a statement yesterday, said customers using its Internet services may experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in Europe and that those using other IP (Internet Protocol) services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to Europe may also experience some service degradation.

It said the affected cables, on the South-East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine network between Palermo in southern Italy and Alexandria in northern Egypt, were being repaired.

Some of the links, meanwhile, had been rerouted to ease congestion, it added.

During the restoration process, traffic to northern America may experience minor degradation while traffic to other countries was unaffected, it said.

Customers can call TM at 100 and select “Internet Services” or e-mail TM at help@tm.com.my regarding Internet-related problems, it added. — Bernama

WARGH!!!

I FEEL LIKE I'M GONNA BITE THEIR HEADS OFF!!!

Seriously this is getting on my nerves. TM ARE YOU SLEEPING ON THE JOB??? A page that used to loads in seconds is still loading after 5 minutes I opened it! Paul Tan is taking ages to load. Facebook is even worse. Is this what you call broadband? Do more in less time? MY ASS!! This is what it used to be like in the days of 56K dial-up Internet... What happened to MSC? What happened to vision 2020? Vision 2020 will definitely be delayed if this goes on.

People let's rise up and form our own ISP company.

Doggoned!

It was 7pm in the evening. It was a lovely evening as the setting sun illuminates the sky with a bluish orangey hue. The evening was lovely indeed until dearest mummy came home from office..

Before alighting from her car, she accidentally pushed the gate release switch on her remote control. All hell broke loose since then. A pair of red HID-like sparkle came from my house compound. Even before dearest mummy could use her Psionic secret ability to shut the hatch, the 400hp (hound power) rear-powered Cerberus-like canine engaged launch controls and sped away from Command Centre with the speed of light.

Dearest mummy's Woman sense tingled. Without hesitating, she launch a brainwashing attack on the loose canine by sending it a spine-chilling message which reads, "U BETTER COME BACK HERE FUTIEN OR ELSE...". The escapee quickly came to a halt. A smirk then appears of it's face. A smirk that indicates that the attack had failed. It appears that the failure was a result of an ability called Mana Shield which blocks non-physical attacks. In a flash, fido-mutt accelerated into the distance and disappeared from sight.

At Command Centre, a top level code-red priority emergency was declared. Two squadron of highly maneuverable, warhead carrying and inter-galactic capable jets were launched, Vincent-Squadron1 and Victor-Squadron2. The mission was to search, neutralise and contain target. The target MUST be captured ALIVE.

Vincent-Squadron1 and Victor-Squadron2 went into stealth mode and flew as low as possible to the ground to avoid detection by the target. The area was divided into two sectors, Sector-Playground and Sector-Houses. Both the squad went into different sector to search for the target. The target remained elusive. Soon the search party was joined by Mummy-Squadron and Papa-Ship. Still, the boogey was nowhere in sight.

The search party had to return to Command Centre to refuel and rearm as the fuel warning light came on. After being refueled with premium 'Teh Cina dari China' and re-armed with two torpedoes of 'Cintan Instant Noodles', the search party was launched again. This time the area was widen by a radius of 1000m and all our four heroes banded together and went as one in Mummy-Squadron's gravel-grinding, fossil-powered, front wheel drive, Champagne-coloured Proton Batmobile. It took off with 2G of acceleration and went into the neighbouring Eco-system.

Strange creatures were spotted lurking around there. There was a creature which looks like the local water buffalo and it was riding on a mantis looking creature that screamed, "WAAAAAAAA!!" as its ears was squeezed and twisted by the other creature. That was the only creature that could be described by words. The search was intensified as flood lights on the Batmobile were switched on.

Finally the boogey was spotted 768m away from Command Centre. As the search party approached the boogey, it did a 360 and went the other way. Vincent-Squadron1 had no choice and did a Rubens Barrichello for Victor-Squadron2 who was doing a Michael Schumacher and came from the opposite direction. The escapee was fooled and thus contained by Victor-Squadron2 with a magnetically enhanced carbon fibre leash. It was escorted into the Batmobile by the four squads and was transported back to Command Centre soon after that.

Shytmyx?

Recently it has been really laggy in here. No not in Blogspot. The Internet. Even a simple html page takes a few seconds to load, it used to just appear. Yes even though after I have cleared every user data off my Firefox. This leads me to question TM's Fair Usage Policy.

"TM is committed to ensuring our customers receive the best broadband service at the most competitive price. To achieve this goal, we provide a contended broadband service. This means our Internet bandwidth (capacity) is catered to be shared by all our customers at any one point in time, to ensure we provide a satisfactory and acceptable performance on an equal basis to all our customers."

Satisfactory and acceptable performance on equal basis? So I assume if I'm suffering from slow connection here, then the others share the same fate as me. Before the Policy was announced, I enjoyed faster speeds. No P2P software was switched on then and now. Neither was Windows Live Messenger on. I don't think I fall in their category of 'heavy users' where speed(bandwidth) cuts are being applied since I rarely download or upload any large files.

So why am I suffering from a loss of bandwidth here? Are there any maintenance being made to the lines by TM? Or did they shut down a few servers since the economy doesn't look too good? Since they monopolise the Internet service provider (ISP) industry, I'm pretty sure they will take a long time to improve their services. Lucky for them that no other major ISPs are around.

Flipping the coin, we Malaysians are lucky to have broadband Internet connection which is much much faster than the dial-up one.

Maybe I should count my lucky stars instead of giving them a thumbs-down for their services.

Emergency?

I just reached Penang yesterday morning (2am). On the way down, in the state of Perak, I was stunned when I saw dozens of police escorts speeding down south. One after another they sped past, with their blue flashing lights turned on. Some of the escort riders only turned on their blue flashing lights and no other lights. That's some example by the police huh?

I was further surprised when I saw two helicopters with search lights turned on hovering above the North-South expressway. I also noticed that there were police blockades at several exits to towns in Perak. The exit to Ipoh was closed off by a squad of policemen who looks as if they were waiting for a high profile criminal.

When I passed the Jelapang toll, I saw a couple of big trucks being stopped by the police. What I saw further up north near the Kuala Kangsar exit was even more astonishing. Traffic was stopped by the police until people start coming out from their cars. The jam stretched for a few kilometres.

At first I thought some emergency had happened but as dozens of police escorts sped past and the police blockades, it must have been some dinner or event with dozens of high powered Menteris or Sultans.

I have some ideas on where you can spend it 'the right way'. =)

1. Encrust, gold-plate, gold-trim or chrome your ride

2. Accessorise

3. Do the Casino Royale

4. Be a Jack Sparrow

5. Move to 90210 (Beverly Hills)
