World gone mad, Rowling gone rich!

Rowling, as in JK Rowling. The creator of the highly successful Harry Potter series. Now there's Harry Potter mania all over the world. Wizards and witches wanna-bes can be seen everywhere, from Halloween parties to cosplay competitions. And now in our muggle (A term in the Harry Potter series for normal human beings with no powers) world, we are even playing Quidditch!

"In Muggle Quidditch, as in Wizard Quidditch there are four positions on a team. In Wizard Quidditch, all positions are played in the air on magical flying brooms; however, due to the non-existence of such devices, Muggle Quidditch is played on the ground, with game play confined to a playing field comparable in size to a soccer field."

In Muggle Quidditch (That's what they call it in the real world here), they actually carry broomsticks in between their legs and run around the field. Half of them throw basketballs around and trying to get it in hula hoops (goalpost) to score points. The other half of the team (Beaters) would be throwing medicine balls at the opposing team.

And then there is the Snitch. In the reality, he's actually a guy wearing yellow (Imagine the Digi yellow man, I will follow you!!) from top to toe. He is going to carry a tennis ball in a sock stuffed inside his pants (I don't wanna know where..). This Mr. Snitch is going to run and jump around the field until the Seeker catches him and wrangles the balls (eh, I meant ball) out of him. All that with everyone straddling a broomstick in between their legs (ouch!).

That's about it about Muggle Quidditch. Can the world get more quirky?

To my surprise yes, some colleges in UK already had their inter-college Muggle Quidditch competition while some others are touring the country to promote this new sport (uhh.. I think it is..).

"hey, baby, want to play 'Catch My Snitch'?" "Look for the Golden Ball in my pants"

Fan-atics!!

This just came in my inbox from Lee Chern.

Looks familiar? I'm sure you chinese song listening crowd would recognise who he is at first glance. Looks weird eh? Something is not right eh? Yes something is very wrong here. The he here is in fact a she. No no there's no she-male or ladyboy thing going on here. It's more of a crazy fan dressed up to look like her idol. Hmm.. looks quite similar too.. The eyes and the facial expression looks the same!

Ok ok, for those who still don't know who the actual he is, he's Jay Chou, a chinese superstar. Yes a superstar despite his looks. Lol..

The real Jay Chou.

$4 million promise!

This young man here has been promised a $4 million super car for free by his team manager Ron Dennis. That is if he wins 2008 title and constructors champion goes to Mclaren.

Fortunately, our deal gives me a bit of time to save up!
~Ron Dennis

And for those who is still in the dark about who this young man is, he's Lewis Hamilton. Rookie extraordinaire who almost stole the crown from Kimi last season.

And the $4 million super car I'm refering to is none other than the Mclaren LM. Or rather the Mclaren F1.

Now is there any empty space in any F1 team?

Past memories...

A messenger ran frantically up to his general's camp. Huffing and panting he informed General Thicondrious that Stratonicea has been taken. As he heard that, the rose up from his seat and commanded the 3rd Cavalry to follow. He grabbed his sword and marched out of his camp. He mounted his horse and rode to Stratonicea with the 3rd Cavalry behind him.

"Ha! And this is the mighty fortress Stratonicea? You call this a fortress?" proclaimed Thicondrious upon reaching Stratonicea. Stratonicea was once a vibrant and glorious city. All that is left now is a smouldering ruin. Bodies with limbs missing was strewn all over the place. Thicondrious and the 3rd Cavalry rode into the city. Most of the buildings are still on fire. There was smoke everywhere. Cries for help can be heard.

Then suddenly something caught his eye. At a corner of a building there was a child, cowering in fear as Thicondrious drew out his sword from its shealth and dismounted from his steed. The child started crying. Thicondrious stopped beside. He raised his sword and uttered, "No Stratonicean shall live after what they have done to Graviscae, merciless scum!". Just before he swung his sword, memories began to flood his mind.

It took him back to his childhood days. He was raised by farmer parents on a serene and peaceful village on the outskirts of Graviscae. "Run Thicondrious! Run! Girta is on our tail!" called a familiar voice. He looked behind and saw a little boy running towards him. His face reminded him of Argos, his brother. "What are you doing standing there? Stunned by Medusssa?" yelled the little boy. Behind the little boy was a ferocious onyx colured dog. The little boy snatched his wrist and pulled him on. Soon, he was running with the little boy but he's still dumbfounded on how he got here and kept wondering. They kept running and soon they came to a river. The little boy ran and jumped into the river while still holding on to his hand. They went under the water from the impact and resurfaced. The dog stopped at the river bank and kept barking at them. Thicondrious looked down and saw his reflection. He wasn't the battle-hardened general now. An image of a little boy with blue eyes stared back at him. He brought his hands up and looked at them. They were smooth with no battle scars or dirt on them. He's back in his childhood again.

"That was fun eh? Let's do that some other time" said the little boy who is floating beside him. "Who are you and what is your name?" Thicondrious asked him. The little boy replied, "I'm your brother! Argos! You looked and sound a bit off today. Did you take those weird smelling Wicker leaves again? The last time you took them, you called Cerberus your father! Are you sure you did not take them again?" Thicondrious looked at him and smiled. He turned and began to swim to the other side of the river. Girta was still barking at them from the other side.

Both of them got up from the river on the other side. "What did you do to make that dog chase you?" asked Thicondrious. "Owh that.. I tried to steal some Pin fruits from old Hort's orchard," said Argos rather meekly. Thicondrious laughed and told him not to do it again as it would be quite impossible with 8 guard dogs there. Argos smiled. Both of them journeyed home.

They reached home when the sun started to dip below the horizon. Two figures were waiting for them at the village entrance. A man and a woman. Thicondrious squinted and realised both of them are his parents. He ran towards them and gave them a hug. Tears trickle down his face. "I thought you guys were gone.." said Thicondrious in between sobs. "We are always here for you. Although we may not be there physically, we are always there in your heart, watching you" replied his father as he held both his sons and his wife in his embrace.

Suddenly all of them faded into the background. The image of his village disintegrated into particles and he was transported back to Stratonicea. He knew that it was all memories. Happy memories. He opened his eyes and the child was crying and cowering before him. Pleading him to spare her life. "I cannot do this..." thought Thicondrious to himself. He dropped his sword and walked into the ruins. "Don't follow me." ordered Thicondrious to the cavalrymen behind him. They looked on as their general disappeared into the smoke.

Beyond words...

Somethings are not what they seem to be. Saying I love you might just be a phrase to cheer me up. It might seem warm and all but I felt its emptyness echoing. I'm sorry or some lame excuses is not the words i want to hear from you. It's not that I want you not to say it but if only you knew how I really felt deep inside. How easy it would be if only I knew what you were thinking all this while. Wouldn't it be easier to show me how you feel? This feeling inside me now is indescribable, it's something more than words. Showing me your feelings is all you have to do to make it real. But was it even there at all? If it was, then you wouldn't have to say those cold and empty 'I love you's. Yea you called and text me to say that you love me but the emptiness is still there. Yea cause I already know that from that day, it would never be the same again...

What would you do if you knew how I felt? What would you do? What would you do if my heart was torn in two? Would you even care? Or would you even notice?

Sigh.. life sucks at times...

Silence is Golden.

The world celebrated World Silent Day on March 21st. A day I have never heard of. No you're not required to shut your mouth for that day. You are just required to turn off all your electrical appliances up to 4 hours on that day to tackle global warming.

How much can you save with just 4 hours? Global warming will not just disappear with 4 hours. Yes a total of 4 hours from thousands, maybe millions of people across the globe might be a significant saving but does it push back the clock of global warming? No. A good but futile effort.

Kalo pandai, jangan togel!

I'm sure you are wondering on the meaning of the word 'togel'. It had me wondering too when I first saw it.

Nike has added a lot of local flavour in its current advertisement for its football products. If you still haven't heard of it, it's call Jangan Togel. On the word 'togel', it actually means the team that concedes first must play the rest of the game ‘togel’, without their shirts. A game of football that would be. Yes I've been through those days but it was a bit different. Sometimes it was decided on a voluntary basis which team to 'togel'. Sometimes it was decided with the flip of a coin.

What is 'togel' for? It's to differentiate players from each team as both team don't own their own jerseys. So it's half-naked team versus the fully clothed team. It's easier to recognise your team mate that way so that you don't shoot the ball to the wrong goal post or pass the ball to the opposing team.

The 'Jangan Togel' site actually looks very nice. There is a lot of comic style graphics all over it. It also tries to bring back days of past where we would play football 'togel' style with the colour scheme. Black, white and multiple shades of brown and yellow. Kudos to Nike and its associates for this great site!

Called to serve...

I heard someone calling my name. I arose from my slumber and immediately recognised that voice. It was Jessica. I squinted and stared at the clock. It's 7.30 am. I felt like I've only been asleep for 5 minutes. She beckons me to go and wash my face. I did reluctantly.

I turned the tap anti-clockwise and water came out of the faucet in a clear and steady stream. The water is cold to the touch as I cupped both my hands together to retain water. I splashed it against my face a few times. I feel rejuvenated and re-energised. I sipped the water from my palms and gurgled them in my mouth. A moment later i spit it out. Ahh.. That's better. It cleared up my morning breath by a lil bit. This might sound disgusting but this is a norm when I was camping back in those days.

I came out of the toilet looking fresh and with water still trickling down my face. I looked around for Jessica. She was no where to be found. I went back to the study room where I was sleeping in the previous night. I folded the blanket and mattress up. Just as I was finishing, I heard her saying, "No need la.. Kakak will do it..". Oh well I was done anyway. I turned around and realised she was ready.

She unlocked the main door and opened the gate. We slid into her ivory kelisa. She fired up the engine and back out of the porch. Then we were off to PISA (Penang International Sports Arena). There were many cars on the road by now. As we were reaching the side gate of PISA, we realised that most of the cars we saw are turning in to PISA. Most of the parking bays there are full except for a few further ones. We found one by the side of the swimming complex which was quite a distance from the registration counters.

I looked at Jessica and I immediately knew the reason she was wearing a cap. It was supposed to be a shield if any of her emotion were to run wild. She was unusually quiet and uptight. Upon reaching the registration counter, we saw crowds of people. Parents, friends, brothers, sisters, uncle, aunties and even some grandparents turned up to send their beloved off. Some were seen sobbing and some were laughing and hugging. Then I saw Sim at the counter, reporting himself in for National Service. His head was already shaved. A wee bit too short. Well that's Sim, his usual mischievous self. He looks ok. No sobbing or tearing. A middle-aged lady approached us and begin talking to Sim. It took me a while to recognise that that lady was actually his mum. I've only seen his mum on a few occasions. She's friendly alright.

We were then searching for his bus. We wondered left and right in the mazes of yellow school buses. Alas, we found his bus. It was parked at the front. We stood by the bus and chatted for a while. He asked for a private moment with Jessica. I obliged and moved a distance away. A few minutes later Sim walked toward his mum and said his goodbyes. After embracing his mum for the last time in 3 months, he walked towards me and gave me a hug. I gave him a bear hug instead. His emotion is still contained. I took a quick look at Jessica and I realised that she was tearing already. As the officer in charge started the last call for participants to board the bus, Sim was already seen inside the bus. He peered at us through the partly tinted window and waved. We waved back and started walking away. The mum left earlier because she wanted to follow the bus to the camp which is in Balik Pulau.

As we walked away, I asked Jessica where to. She answered, "Take me anywhere". She is distraught but still trying to keep it all inside her. We walked around PISA and lost our way. I started pointing in all directions and kept saying, "I think your car is that way". Eventually we walked one big round around PISA before we found her car.

Sim is going away for 3 months. He is still here. We can still visit him. He'll be back after 3 months. Those were my words to Jessica. However no matter what I say it will never fill that void in her heart. A void that will always be there until Sim is back for good. People form bonds, be it strange or absurb, those bonds are one of the strongest and sweetest. Those bonds shall not be broken by any force known to men. It will last forever. Sim I'll see you soon. For the moment, take care and have fun in camp.
